About me:
Hello and welcome! I’m Kirsten Walker, a passionate and experienced Child and Youth Counsellor who recently relocated to Calgary, Alberta. With over 12 years of hands-on experience and a Bachelor’s degree in Child and Youth Care, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside children, youth, and families through a wide range of challenges and life transitions.
My work has taken me into a variety of environments—hospitals, day treatment programs, schools, residential care homes, and individual in-home settings. This diverse background has given me a well-rounded, flexible approach to care and a deep appreciation for the unique needs of each individual and family I support.
One of my core areas of specialization is working with neurodivergent individuals, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, OCD, anxiety, intellectual disabilities, and other developmental differences. I’m committed to meeting each person where they’re at, advocating for their strengths, and developing tailored strategies that encourage independence, confidence, emotional regulation, and overall well-being.
My approach is person-centered, trauma-informed, and grounded in empathy and respect. I blend evidence-based techniques with creative, engaging methods such as play, art, movement, and nature-based activities to support learning and growth. I also collaborate closely with caregivers, educators, and other professionals to ensure continuity of care and shared success.
In addition to my professional background, I am a NASM-Certified Youth Exercise Specialist, allowing me to integrate physical wellness into sessions when beneficial. Physical activity is often an important tool for building self-esteem, regulating emotions, and fostering social skills. I am also certified in First Aid and Nonviolent Crisis Prevention and Intervention (NVCPI), and I maintain an up-to-date Police Check available upon request.
Outside of work, I’m a proud triathlete and an enthusiastic skier. Training and competition keep me grounded and energized, while skiing with friends and family helps me stay connected to joy, nature, and play—values I bring into my practice every day. Whether in my personal or professional life, I’m always eager to grow, learn, and take on new challenges.
